Sheep, Seals and Whales Oh My!! Kaikoura, NZ

Leaving the farmstay I passed by several vineyards and had a quick bowl of seafood chowder and chardonnay. This would be a great place to visit in the summer w/ all of the great wineries!! Kinda the slow season now. :( But, hard to do tastings and still drive.

Saw lots of seals on the rocks on the drive down. I lost count after 53, but there were at least twice that. The seals can come out of the water and onto the rocks, acrss the road and into the train tunnels to take shelter from storms. It can be quite hazardous for the drivers and train engineers, they do get run over.

Went whale watching, saw 6 Sperm Whales! This is a very large migration area bc there is so much marine life, the whales come to feed. Four people threw up on the boat, it was great. The whales are magnificant! I have been whale watching before, but never saw any. This was spectacular. Sailors named the whales and were quite simple about it. Blue Whales, Grey Whales, hmmm... Sperm Whales have a large resovoir of oil in their heads and when it comes out it is a white, sticky substance.

Lots of great wildlife!
